The Weight of Waiting

Do you ever feel anxious or uncomfortable about your place in life?

Maybe you hate being in school and you just want to fast forward to the part of life when you have a real job. If you're a senior in high school, you've been itching to graduate for months. Maybe you hate living at home and want to get away or just move out. Or, perhaps, you hate living in a dorm and want to move back home. I know so many people are anxious to skip past their singleness. And others just want to get out of America and travel.

If your anxiety is as light as wanting to skip the rest of the school year so you can enjoy summer next month, or as heavy as wanting to skip several years of your life to where you think things will be "better", you know that familiar feeling either way.

As I am dealing with eagerness in my own life, I am reminded of 1 Corinthians 7:17.

"Each of you should continue to live in whatever situation the Lord has placed you, and remain as you were when God first called you. This is my rule for all the churches."

So you're unhappy with living at home? Be content and trust Him. You just want to pursue your career? Be content and trust Him. You want to skip the hard parts? Be content and trust Him.

I think in our anxious moments, the best thing we can possibly do is be still and listen. And through trusting in Him, we will find peace. As Beth Moore likes to say, "There is peace where He is prince." So have you made your desires prince or have you made Christ your prince? Because where Christ isn't prince, nothing will run smoothly. Nothing will make sense. You will not remember Who is in control. In fact, you may not even let Him have the control like you used to.

We cannot trust in ourselves and what we think is best. Putting it simply, it just doesn't work. We become slaves.

Think about what Jesus said to Martha when she was distracted, stressed, over-whelmed, and then felt, under-appreciated. "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:41-42

And what did Mary choose? "She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said." Luke 10:39

Martha chose the world. Mary chose the Lord. Mary had nothing to worry about. Her worries were put in second place because she knew who had to be number one. And Martha was stressed out over a dinner!

Something to ask yourself: is what I'm worried about going with me when I leave this earth?
In most cases, no. If you feel stuck, just be still. Believe in the peace God will bring you and believe Him when He says that He works all things for our good.

No matter what we are anxious for, we have to remember that God opens the opportunities at just the right time. He will take care of the details- I promise! We just have to trust that and be content in the waiting process.

  1. This was so good! I needed to hear it. Matthew 6:27 says "And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?" I was reminded of that while reading this. After reading this post I actually have a lot of peace :)

    1. wow, Cass! I am so glad you feel peace. I hate how I can get so caught up into the details and then analyze every possibility to death! Thank you for sharing Matthew 6.. I also keep thinking of "He feeds the birds.. He will certainly care for you." Glad you have peace!
